The Isle of Wight has always been a special place for Catherine, thanks to her Great Aunt Averil who lives there. Many childhood visits were spent crossing the Solent, exploring the island, and building up a treasure chest of memories.
For Mike, the Isle of Wight first appeared on the map back in 1992, but it wasn’t until much later that he returned with Catherine to rediscover it properly.
Together we’ve explored places like Osborne House, once Queen Victoria’s holiday retreat, and wandered around Ryde with its sweeping beaches and traditional seaside feel.
Getting there is half the fun – especially when it’s by hovercraft. There’s nothing quite like skimming across the Solent in ten minutes flat, with all the noise and drama that makes it feel like a cross between a boat trip and a fairground ride. It’s become one of those little rituals that makes the island feel like a mini adventure every time we go.
The Isle of Wight may be just a short hop from the mainland, but for us it feels like stepping into a different pace of life – part family tradition, part seaside escape, and always a reminder of Catherine’s roots and Mike’s enthusiasm for any excuse to ride the hovercraft again.
