Klundert is a small town in the Netherlands, and for Catherine it’s a place full of family, childhood memories, and regular visits to see her uncle and cousins who live there.
For Mike, though, it’s still something of a hidden gem – he’s only been once so far, but quickly discovered the charm of Dutch hospitality (and the dangerously moreish nature of stroopwafels!).
For Catherine, trips to Klundert have always been about family first – catching up around the table, exploring the little town, and enjoying the quieter pace of life compared to home. For Mike, it was a chance to see this part of Catherine’s world, meet more of her family, and get a taste (sometimes literally) of her Dutch connections.
On that visit, we also took a trip to Kinderdijk to see the windmills – one of those “pinch yourself” Dutch experiences that looks like it’s straight from a postcard. Between windmills, bikes, and waffles, it’s safe to say Mike got the full Dutch starter pack in one weekend.
It may not be as bustling as Amsterdam or as well-known as Rotterdam, but Klundert has its own special place in our story.
It’s the link to Catherine’s family across the North Sea, a reminder of the bonds that stretch beyond borders, and a lovely excuse for Mike to keep working on his Dutch… even if his vocabulary so far mostly revolves around snacks.
